Surf's Up

While I was at AWP, drinking Georgian Sweet Water pale ale,
watching the passers-by from the window perch of The Urban Tea Party,
and listening to the publishers of newish lit journals like failbetter.com and A Public Space,

my New Hope, Minnesota, friend sent me this picture of his board-groovy son playing in the backyard this past weekend:

Woo! AWP!! The year I was there I met a Japanese writer with whom I fell hopelessly in love for those three days. She was studying in Milwaukee at the time. I'd published her while working at Crab Orchard Review.

We talked for five minutes. She seemed unimpressed.

But it was there. I'm sure of it. She's probably pining away for me somewhere.

Or maybe, even, she's written a sonnet for you.

Hey, I brought back a few free copies of Crab Orchard Review--and learned about the Charles Johnson Award from its managing editor.
